Omschrijving

Supervising individual students requires a specific set of skills. Especially the process of supervising Bachelor or Master theses tends to give rise to a whole series of questions. How do I find the right balance between guidance and letting go? How do I adapt to individual student differences? How do I deal with problem cases? How do I limit the amount of time I invest to acceptable levels? How do I combine my role as supervisor with that of assessor?

For whom
This course is intended for all non-Dutch-speaking lecturers or Ph.D. students who are involved in supervising students. It is also open to those who do speak Dutch but prefer to take a workshop in English together with international colleagues.

Results
After this workshop, you should be able to
• adapt your style of supervision to the needs of the individual student;
• plan your supervision in a systematic way;
• structure your meetings with the student;
• give helpful feedback;
• assess a thesis in accordance with the main assessment requirements.

Content
In this workshop, we will investigate different supervision models, and revisit learning styles and how to deal with individual differences. We will identify the crucial stages in a thesis project and how to make a supervision plan. We will also discuss common problems and there will be an opportunity to practice difficult situations such as conveying negative feedback. This means the workshop provides a mix of theoretical background and hands-on practice.

Relationship to the BKO teaching qualification
“Coaching and supervising students” is one of the five competence areas defined in the UvA lecturers competence overview. Those who would like to gain their University Teaching Qualification (BKO) can take this workshop in combination with the initial training course and the workshop on assessing students.
